The Olympic Games are firing up a Chinese culture fever, and bookstores in Beijing are greeting a lot more foreign readers than before, according to Beijing Daily. The most obvious change is the increase in sales of many foreign-language books. Deputy Director of the marketing and management centre in the Beijing Book Building Zhang Zheng said: "Sales of foreign-language books this month have reached nearly 100 million copies, 21.6 percent more than the previous month."
Foreign-language books and even Chinese-language books have attracted many foreign readers. Books on tourism, Beijing customs, Chinese culture, Olympic tourism, and Chinese language learning are among the favorites.
Foreign readers are not only interested in China tea, silk and Beijing maps; they make efforts to try out Chinese classics. In the Wangfujing Foreign Bookstore, Katie from the United States stopped in front of the Chinese classic novel "Dream of Red Mansions" in English. This novel is published by Penguin in five volumes with a cover of elegant and ancient Chinese beauty. Katie said that she had heard of this great work in the United States; but had not read it as she considers it very difficult. However, Katie added: "I made up my mind to buy it in a Beijing bookstore. This is especially meaningful." Apart from "A Dream of Red Mansions", "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and "The Art of War" are also popular among foreign readers.
